Exploring Infinity with Dr Davide Penazzi

News - 8 May 2025

Ten students from the School of Maths explored the fascinating world of number theory during a lecture by Dr Davide Penazzi from the University of Central Lancashire. Specialising in Model Theory and Mathematical Education, Dr Penazzi introduced the concept of infinity and its many forms—countable, uncountable, and beyond—through interactive activities using counters and bags.

Students found the session engaging. “I really enjoyed learning the idea that there is more than one type of infinity. My favourite part was creating the bijection between the naturals and the rationals,” said Subhan Mahar. Clara Drycz added, “The complex process of comparing objects that are of an infinite nature was intriguing and enlightening.”

Staff member Nicola Smith said, “Dr Davide was able to clearly explain the complex ideas of countable and uncountable infinities. He showed how sets that appear to be different sizes can actually be the same size, and used hands-on activities that helped students work through the logic themselves. It was a wonderful and thought-provoking session.”
