RSFC Students Broaden Horizons at Beijing Summer School
Three Rochdale Sixth Form College students attended a residential summer school at Beijing University in July, after completing the Mandarin Chinese Enrichment programme and achieving HSK1, the first recognised proficiency level in Mandarin.
The summer school combined intensive language learning with the opportunity to experience university life in China, alongside visits to significant cultural and historical landmarks such as the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, and the Great Wall.
Amrita, who took part in the Mandarin Enrichment in 2024–2025, said:
“It was an amazing opportunity to practise Mandarin in the classroom, experience a new culture, and meet interesting people. I particularly enjoyed visiting the Summer Palace and the Great Wall.”
Hena reflected on the cultural and academic benefits:
“Going to China helped me expand my horizons and made the idea of studying at an international university feel more realistic. A highlight was visiting the Forbidden City and learning about its history, as well as standing on a section of the Great Wall that was over 600 years old.”
Noah highlighted how the trip combined study with exploration:
“It was a fascinating experience — learning with Chinese teachers, meeting new people, and seeing Beijing’s unique mix of history and modern life. Experiencing university life in China was especially valuable.”
The Mandarin Enrichment programme at Rochdale Sixth Form College continues to provide students with distinctive opportunities to develop their language skills and engage with new cultures.
