School of Maths Lecture Explores Information Theory

News - 11 June 2026

The School of Maths recently hosted a lecture delivered by Dr Veronica Kelsey from the University of Manchester. Dr Kelsey introduced students to Information Theory, a relatively modern area of mathematics first developed in the 1920s. The session explored how these ideas underpin real-world communication systems, including NASA’s communication with satellites.

Students also looked at how mathematics can be used to encode and send secret messages, as well as the connections between maths and popular word-based games such as Wordle and Scrabble.

The lecture provided an engaging insight into how mathematical theory is applied in technology, communication and everyday problem-solving.
